Advocacy is a critical component of effective nonprofit leadership. MNA's upcoming advocacy training series, Advocacy for the Nonprofit Professional, is designed to provide nonprofit staff, board members and volunteers with skills and increased capacity to improve their effectiveness in the advocacy arena. Session content covers a range of topics focussing on advocacy with policymakers and the media as a means of influencing public policies that further your mission and strengthen your community.

Public Policy 101: The Basics of Nonprofit Advocacy is the first workshop in this training series. Lobbying laws, planning for advocacy, and basic advocacy skills will be introduced. This is a basic workshop for nonprofit staff, volunteers and board members who are thinking about increasing their capacity to do policy work at the State Capitol. Definitions of public policy, advocacy, lobbying, and the arenas of influence will be discussed as well as a basic description of the legislative process and how bills become laws. Presenter: Tiffany Aurora, Michigan Nonprofit Association.

Public Policy 101: The Basics of Nonprofit Advocacy will take place on Monday, April 20, from 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. at Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit (3111 Grand River Avenue, Detroit). The cost to register is $25 for MNA members and $35 for non-members. Register Now!
