Mitzy Sharp Futro

Mitzy's pictureMs. Sharp Futro is a member of the staff of Michigan Nonprofit Association’s Metro Detroit Partnership, an effort to better serve southeast Michigan’s nonprofit community through collaborative efforts and targeted services.  In her role at MNA, Mitzy works extensively on training, consulting and other capacity-building and education efforts.  Drawing on her legal background and more than 7 years of specialization in nonprofit organizations, she works with boards and staff members to educate them about the significant legal, regulatory, compliance and organizational development/sustainability challenges facing nonprofits today.

Mitzy has written and edited a number of brief publications, and was a contributing editor to the Michigan Nonprofit Management Manual, 4th Edition.  Her training background includes work with organizations such as Neighborhood Partnership Academy, Community Economic Development Association of Michigan, Community Economic Development Advocates of Detroit, Habitat for Humanity, United Way Community Services, the BoardWalk Training Series, the Michigan Conference on Affordable Housing and Accounting Aid Society, who honored her with the organization’s 2003 Charles F. Kleber Award for distinguished service to nonprofit services. 

Prior to joining MNA, Mitzy was Director of the Nonprofit Management Program at Accounting Aid Society (AAS), a Detroit-based organization that provided management expertise to nonprofit organizations throughout Michigan.  At AAS, Mitzy staffed the organization’s “AnswerLine for Nonprofit Management,” coordinated its workshops and trainings, and oversaw continued development of the Michigan Nonprofit Management Manual

From 2001-2003, Mitzy served as an Equal Justice Works Fellow at Community Legal Resources (CLR) in Detroit, Michigan.  At CLR, Mitzy helped to develop and implement a direct education initiative that makes legal information easily available and understandable for the nonprofit community.  She is also an adjunct professor Wayne State University’s Master’s of Urban Planning program, where she teaches Planning and Development Law.

A 1996 graduate of the University of Southern California and a 1999 graduate of University of Southern California Law School, Mitzy is admitted to practiced law in California, Colorado and Michigan.
