ABOUT MNA

Fact Sheet: Michigan Nonprofit Association

The Michigan Nonprofit Association is the collective voice of Michigan's nonprofit organizations. MNA serves as a statewide network for the sector, a resource center on effective management practices, and as an advocate for the nonprofit community.

Mission: The Michigan Nonprofit Association increases the capacity of Michigan’s nonprofits to serve, strengthen and transform communities.

The goals of MNA are to:

  • Provide membership services - such as information on fundraising, management, taxes, and technology; offer discounts on services such as health insurance, director and officer liability insurance, credit card processing, and classified advertising.
  • Provide training and technical assistance - such as regional workshops on nonprofit management, legal issues, volunteer management, board development, lobbying, and other nonprofit topics; and host annual statewide conferences, such as the Michigan Nonprofit SuperConference, and a public policy day.
  • Promote nonprofit involvement in public policy - MNA educates policymakers on the critical issues affecting nonprofits, advocates for sector issues on the state and national level, and works with partners to increase lobbying and advocacy by charities.
  • Promote research on the sector - MNA works with Michigan universities to develop new and promote existing research about the Michigan nonprofit sector. Research is then distributed to practitioners, funders, policymakers and the media.

Organization's History: Incorporated in 1990, as the Michigan Nonprofit Forum, the organization was first a think-tank dedicated to discussing issues impacting nonprofits. In 1994, the organization was renamed as the Michigan Nonprofit Association to provide direct advocacy and services to local nonprofit organizations.
