Meetings with Legislators During Michigan Nonprofit Day:
If you have decided to meet individually or as one organization with your elected officials, the following are a few suggestions for how to make your own appointment. Please note that prior to your meetings, you will be provided with suggested talking points on the status of Michigan nonprofits during these tough economic times.
Call your legislator’s office as soon as possible to arrange the meeting. You may need to be flexible with your schedule, depending on the Representative/Senator’s schedule.
Based on the House session schedule, we suggest that you try to make your appointment(s) with members of the House of Representative between 10:15 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.
Based on the Senate session schedule, we suggest that you try to make your appointment(s) with members of the Senate between 1:45 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
We encourage you to consider meeting with your own Representative/Senator and to consider meeting with the Representatives/Senators that represent the areas that your organization serves.
You can find the phone numbers and names for members of the House of Representatives at www.house.mi.gov and phone numbers and names for members of the Senate at www.senate.mi.gov.
When you call your Representative(s)/Senator(s) offices, simply let them know that you are either a constituent of the legislator or that your organization serves the legislator’s district and that you would like to set up a meeting with them on September 22nd during the times listed above. If asked for the purpose of the meeting, feel free to mention that you were hoping for 15-20 minutes of the legislator’s time to update him/her on the condition of nonprofits in his/her district. MNA understands if you have other issues relevant to your specific organization that needs to be discussed during this time.
Once you have set up your meeting, please email the details to Tiffany Aurora at taurora@mnaonline.org. This will help MNA to keep track of who is meeting with legislators during the day.
If you would prefer to meet with your legislator(s) as part of a group, please be sure to indicate this on your registration form. When possible, MNA will do its best to coordinate group meetings.
Two webinars that provide training on how to conduct a meeting with an elected official will be offered to registrants prior to Nonprofit Day. Be sure to take advantage of this opportunity as one complimentary webinar registration is included in the cost of each Nonprofit Day registration.
If you have any questions, please Tiffany Aurora at 517-492-2400 or taurora@mnaonline.org.
