As organizations across the country respond to recent nonprofit scandals, growing government concern, public scrutiny, and the need to promote accountability from within the nonprofit community; the Michigan Nonprofit Association will dedicate its annual Nonprofit Day this year to address these issues of accountability and how it relates to the sector’s relationship with public policymakers.

Nonprofit Day 2004 will be held on September 23 at the Lansing Center in Lansing Michigan. The keynote speaker for this year’s conference will be Diana Aviv, President and CEO of the D.C. based group Independent Sector. Ms. Aviv is a noted expert on the major issues affecting the national nonprofit and philanthropic community, she is a frequent speaker on the accountability and transparency of nonprofit organizations, the financial state of the nonprofit sector, the role of civil society in democracy, and American giving and volunteering trends. Ms. Aviv has testified before Congress and has been quoted in print, broadcast, and online media outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Washington Times.

In addition to the keynote by Ms. Aviv, the top regulator of charities in the state - Michigan’s Chief Deputy Attorney General Carol Isaacs will speak regarding the newly initiated nonprofit advisory committee to the Attorney General (Nonprofit Council for Charitable Trusts). Also, this one-day conference will include sessions that provide insight into possible outcomes of the 2004 elections and their impact on Michigan nonprofits; updates on pressing state and federal policy issues, workshops on the basics of advocacy and the rules and regulations for lobbying; and a post conference session with Nancy Amidei, Amidei is author of the public policy guide "So You Want to Make a Difference?". Ms. Amidei’s session will explore the topics of lobbying and advocacy, 501(c)(3)s (nonprofit organizations), grass-roots networks, influencing regulations and effectively visiting government agencies.

The cost to register for this year’s conference is $40 for MNA members and $55 for Non-MNA members. The registration brochure, with additional details on the conference, will be available late July.

Nonprofit Day 2003
Government and Nonprofits
– Partners in Trying Times

The Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA) held its fourth annual Nonprofit Day on September 24 in Lansing. Over 200 nonprofit leaders attended this one-day conference provided a venue for nonprofit leaders to learn about the public policy topics impacting all nonprofits and how the nonprofit sector can work together to address these concerns.

The theme for this year’s conference was “Government and Nonprofits – Partners in Trying Times.” Sessions during the conference focused on: how government and nonprofits can effectively work together, state and federal policy issues impacting all Michigan nonprofits, forecasts for this legislative session in terms of what’s ahead for public policymaking in Lansing; and workshops on the Michigan budget crisis, effective advocacy, rules and regulations for lobbying, grants and contracting process in Michigan.
