Nellie Tsai Interview | Report: 76% of Michigan nonprofits led by white executives

December 22, 2022

What do these findings say to you about what's going on and about what needs to happen moving forward?

“I think that it shows that there's more work to be done in terms of how might we continue to elevate BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) leadership across the sector, regardless if your organization is led by a white person or a person of color-- just really ensuring that there is more representation across the staff. But that also means that your organization is leaning into doing some of that work to make sure that as you think about how you might diversify, whether it's in having more people who match the lived experiences of the communities you're serving, or if it's around racial diversity, that you're also setting up your organization to be a place where they feel like they belong, and aren't tokenized. “

-Nellie Tsai, MNA Social Innovation Officer
