 General Statement of Duties

 A seasoned grant writing professional is sought to assist Detroit’s premier work readiness center in assuring effective strategies to overcome racism and combat poverty. Assist in the securing of financial and program support from public and private sources.  Grant research, writing, reporting, assembling; as well as corresponding with funding sources are all required. Also involves a high degree of interdepartmental communication and team effort.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Compile, write, and edit grant applications and letters of inquiry exhibiting strong writing and presentation skills
  • Maintain faithful adherence to funders’ proposal guidelines to assure complete and compelling proposals
  • Collaborate with colleagues throughout the agency to assure well-informed grant proposals
  • Demonstrate diligence in documenting grant activities and anticipating upcoming deadlines
  • Research funding sources for specific programs. Seek to identify three new mid- to large-grant funders per year
  • Manage the process of supplying progress reports when required by grant-making organizations
  • Acquire and maintain sound knowledge and understanding of the overall work of the organization, and use that knowledge to better comprehend all programs for which grants will be sought
  • Perform related duties as assigned

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Solid understanding of program design and evaluation, and program budgeting
  • High level of analytical and organizational ability
  • Excellent computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel as well as proficiency with using cybergrant portals
  • Highly organized and able to work independently and under pressure with conflicting deadlines and priorities

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Must have two or more years of demonstrated grant writing success
  • Minimum of Bachelor degree in English, Communications, Public Administration, Nonprofit Management, Social Work, or a related discipline
  • Experience with workforce development, community development, youth development, nutrition, early childhood education, senior citizen services and community organizing a plus.
