Position:  Communications Associate

Function: Works with Communications Officer, the Vice President of Programs & Communications, and cross departmental teams on the development and execution of communications strategies that advance the Foundation’s work.

Reports to: Communications Officer

Overview: The Communications Associate reports directly to the Communications Officer and works as part of a team that includes the Vice President of Programs & Communications. The Communications Associate supports a variety of functions for the overall communications department, including (but not limited to) website & social media management, event coordination, press release & presentation development, board material support, vendor and administrative support, and more. The Communications Associate will also manage specific projects, where appropriate, and will work with other staff, external partners and consultants on Foundation communications.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Support the management and updates of the Foundation’s communications channels, including but not limited to, website, social media, press releases, e-blasts/newsletters, blogs, presentations (i.e. PowerPoint, Prezi, etc.) and storytelling initiatives across two markets.
  • Work with Communications Officer to develop and maintain a pro-active communications calendar that encompasses all of the Foundation’s initiatives and special projects.
  • Serve as liaison with grantees regarding requests for approved uses of Foundation logos and materials, as well as assistance and coordination in developing press releases or marketing materials/ads for Foundation-supported events.
  • Assist Communications Officer in the day-to-day management of several communications vendor relationships with the Foundation and its’ special initiatives and projects.
  • Facilitate email communications to the Foundation’s various contact lists, including maintaining lists, drafting e-blast content, making edits per staff requests and running reports as part of ongoing evaluations.
  • Provide project management for Foundation-led events, in coordination with other staff and vendors/consultants. This may include (but not limited to) development of an event plan, research event space and vendors, developing an event budget, ensuring proper staffing at the event, creation of materials, staffing the event, and reporting on its attendance and impact.
  • Provide communications support for all Foundation special projects and events, including but not limited to, partnerships, group facilitation, brand development management, media relations, and digital and social media.
  • Conduct daily media monitoring, share coverage internally and post key media clips to the Foundation’s website.
  • Assist in the development and upkeep of the Foundation’s photo, video and media archive, to create a well-organized system of assets.
  • Work with Communications Officer & Executive Team to prepare regular Trustee updates and other information briefings for Foundation Trustees and strategic partners.

 Relationship Management/Community Relations:

  • Participate/attend philanthropy, grantee and community functions such as press conferences, seminars on community issues hosted by others, etc.
  • Actively seek opportunities to introduce the Foundation to key community stakeholders.
  • Look for opportunities to interact collaboratively with other funders, not-for-profits or others with community concerns.
  • Promote and facilitate cooperation and collaboration among not-for-profit organizations.
  • Attend regional/national network meetings, providing updates and obtain information.

 Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to Executive Team as directed.
  • Work closely with Vice President of Programs & Communications and Communications Officer.

Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge and Other Background:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 2 to 4 years of relevant, professional work experience.
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in nonprofit communications, public relations, journalism, and/or news media preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Well-developed skill and proficiency in designing presentations.
  • An overall commitment to excellence in quality of work and outcomes; ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines; and demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to new situations.
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment, and work with people and organizations of diverse backgrounds, experiences and cultures; and a personal style that fosters strong team participation and productivity, emphasizing the values of respect and mutual accountability.
  • Passion for improving the quality of life in the Foundation’s geographic focus areas of Western New York and Southeast Michigan and knowledge and interest in the core funding areas RCWJRF supports.

Other Job Requirements:

Regular car travel necessary throughout the Foundation’s service areas. Valid driver’s license and reliable auto with necessary insurance required. Periodic day and/or overnight travel within the Foundation’s service areas, statewide and national also required.
