What it's like to be a Controller at United way for southeastern michigan

As the Controller at United Way for Southeastern Michigan, your day-to-day responsibilities will include overseeing all financial operations, ensuring compliance with accounting principles, and managing the organization's budgets. You will prepare monthly financial statements, conduct variance analysis, and advise on financial planning and forecasting. Collaborating with various departments, you will provide financial insights that support strategic decision-making. Additionally, you will lead audits and maintain accurate financial records while implementing innovative financial processes to improve efficiency. A key aspect of your role will be fostering a culture of transparency and accountability, ensuring that every financial decision aligns with our mission of serving the community.

You will also mentor junior finance staff, cultivating a collaborative atmosphere that prioritizes development and growth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Accounting or Business Administration; Master’s degree preferred
  • Five or more years of experience as a senior-level accounting or finance manager
  • Three or more years of experience with not for profit or governmental fund accounting
  • Working knowledge of financial management and budgeting; experience with 
    audits
  • State and federal grant experience preferred
  • Professional certification, such as CPA (certified public accountant)
