DETROIT, MI – U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-MI), Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, will convene a field hearing titled “Reviewing the 2020 Census: Local Perspectives in Michigan” on MONDAY, July 25, 2022 at 10:00 AM at the Wayne County Community College’s Campus in Downtown Detroit. The hearing will examine the 2020 Census in Michigan and its impacts on local communities. Witnesses will discuss aspects of the census including successes and challenges, public engagement and communications, analysis of the census results, and lessons for the U.S. Census Bureau. Following the hearing, Peters and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan will hold a media availability.

“Every ten years, the census serves as a roadmap to ensure Michiganders and our communities receive important federal funding for education, health care, infrastructure projects, and more,” said Senator Peters. “From a pandemic to political interference and undercounts, the 2020 Census faced unprecedented challenges that could impact Michigan communities like Detroit for years. I’m convening this hearing in Detroit to give a platform to the communities who are most affected by these problems, and to discuss the steps the Census Bureau can take to ensure we can support every Michiganders, regardless of their economic or social circumstances.”

• Jeffrey Morenoff, Ph.D., Professor of Public Policy and Sociology, University of Michigan;
• N. Charles Anderson, President & Chief Executive Officer, Urban League of Detroit & Southeastern Michigan;
• Jane C. Garcia, Vice Chair, Latin Americans for Social and Economic Development (LA SED);
• Maha Freij, President & Chief Executive Officer, Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS); and
• Kelley J. Kuhn, President & Chief Executive Officer, Michigan Nonprofit Association.
  

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which Peters chairs, is responsible for conducting oversight of the U.S. Census Bureau. Peters convened a hearing last year with senior federal officials to examine the 2020 Census and how lawmakers can work to improve operations at the Census Bureau. He also led the Senate to confirm the current Director of the U.S. Census Bureau, Robert E. Santos, in 2021.
