The Chief of Staff is the Executive Director’s operating partner. MDRC sets its direction through its mission, its funders’ requirements, its policies, and its strategic priorities. The Chief of Staff is the person who makes that direction real: turning it into plans people can work from, keeping the organization’s commitments visible, and closing the gap between what MDRC decides and what MDRC completes.
MDRC is a five million statewide organization. The Chief of Staff supervises the Assistive Technology Project Director, who leads the Michigan Assistive Technology Program, MDRC’s largest federally funded program, along with other staff as assigned by the Executive Director. The role also carries signing authority on MDRC checks and timesheets, administers the fee-for-service program and the vendor requirements that come with it, moves special projects to completion, and runs the systems staff use to plan their work and report on it. The Chief of Staff and the Executive Director meet weekly to review what is underway, what is finished, and what needs a decision.
To be clear this position is not solely administrative. The Chief of Staff carries disability-related projects directly and delivers training to staff, partner organizations, and clients. The role includes supervision, administrative tasks and implementation. Some of it is organizational leadership. Some of it is document processing and keeping the office stocked and running. With a small staff, both belong to the same job.
