Fund Development Director

The Mental Health Association in Michigan has partnered with Mondo Unlimited to assist with finding their next Fund Development Director. At the Mental Health Association in Michigan, our mission is to promote quality mental health and substance use disorder supports and services and the availability of mental health treatment through advocacy and education.

Position Description

This position will provide leadership for the Association in these areas: Fund development activities that are designed to increase funding stability for the Association and to support the President/CEO and the MHAM board of directors in the pursuit of dollars that will support the mission of the Association. This position reports to the President/CEO.

The Director of Development will be the primary person responsible for day-to-day management of all fundraising activities and for hands-on implementation and conclusion of the fundraising plans and initiatives of the Association. Reporting directly to and working closely with the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Development will develop and execute a fundraising strategy designed to support the organization's future goals. The Director of Development will provide staff support to the Board's Development Committee, special event committees, and all other volunteers and staff involved in fundraising. The Director will oversee all fundraising administrative considerations and ensure the accuracy, as well as timeliness, of all prospect, donor and volunteer communications, lists-reports etc. S/he also will manage MHAM’s development team.

Responsibilities

  1. In conjunction with the Chief Executive Officer and Board, create and implement an annual and longer-term fundraising plan with dollar goals, objectives, and strategies for identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major individual gifts, foundation grants, and corporate gifts and sponsorships.
  2. Oversee the development, management, and execution of special events and fund-raising campaigns that engage board members, consumers, external stakeholders and staff to ensure efficient and effective implementation.
  3. Maintain ongoing knowledge of the philanthropic community to identify potential donors, strengthen existing relationships and enhance the accuracy of projections.
  4. Give leadership to MHAM’s annual giving program in order to secure the required operating funds and meet the annual goals approved by the Board.
  5. Broaden and diversify base of funding by expanding current initiatives through research and innovative fundraising approaches. Manage other fundraising initiatives as developed.
  6. Manage and grow MHAM’s foundation grants including the identification and cultivation of appropriate potential funders. Research, identify, develop, write, and track proposals to public and private entities that will provide funding critical to the mission and vision of MHAM.
  7. Coordination with the finance department is required to ensure funding for economically feasible and sustainable programs are proposed.
  8. Keep records of all activities and relevant information, regarding submissions; maintain filing system for projects and programs; create reports to track proposals and progress.
  9. Provide timely advice and information on funding opportunities, requirements and procedures; collaborates with members of the management team in defining and implementing project funding strategies.
  10. Develop a program of public information related to the financial needs of MHAM in order to facilitate the achievement of all development goals, including brochures, and programs, information pieces, annual reports, and other development support materials.
  11. Track donations and donor contacts utilizing fundraising software and create donation thank you letters and mail to donors in a timely manner.
  12. Write/edit the agency newsletter and mail to constituents.
  13. Manage activities of the Development Officer. Develops marketing materials and an updated case statement.
  14. Assesses the effectiveness of MHAM’s current fund development efforts and plan and makes recommendations for improvements.
  15. Develops a table of needs that discusses the financial goals and requirements of the organization on a yearly basis and collaborates with the President/CEO on the financial goals.
  16. Participates in meetings of the Finance and Fund Development Committees and works collaboratively with the Chairperson of the Fund Development Committee.
  17. Attends MHAM Board meetings.

Skills and Requirements

  • At least 2 years of relevant and progressively responsible work experience in fundraising and fund development.
  • Bachelor’s degree required in nonprofit management or relevant work experience.
  • At least 1- 2 years of experience in the nonprofit sector.
  • Has proven track record of securing major gifts/awards for at least $100,000 or more.
  • Experience in major gifts, corporate and foundation giving, and special events.
  • Experience in planned giving and digital fundraising is also highly valued.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Experience with mental health advocacy and/or public policy organizations is a plus.
  • Public speaking and presentation skills, as well as strong written communication skills.
  • Proven planning and analytical skills to evaluate complex situations and recommend next steps/solutions.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Commitment to the mission of the Association and belief in the importance of public policy advocacy on behalf of persons with mental health conditions and addictions in Michigan.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, projects, and priorities effectively and professionally.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to travel as needed and current driver’s license required. Access to a vehicle preferred.
  • Commitment to ensuring that the civil rights of persons with mental health conditions and addictions are preserved and protected to the extent possible about mental health public policy in Michigan.
