Development Coordinator

For over 35 years the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum and the Leslie Science & Nature Center have been creating moments of discovery that inspire curiosity, exploration and respect for STEAM and the natural world. Our Museum and Nature Center sites, outreach programs to school classrooms, and digital distance learning programs provide opportunities for people to explore the world around them.

We encourage our team members to be curious, foster innovation, visualize the big picture and take the lead when creating and implementing strategies for achieving our mission. As the Development Coordinator, you'll advance our mission by maintaining donor data and providing support with relationship management, grants and special events.

How you'll contribute:

  • Maintaining the internal database for donations with a high level of detail and accuracy; in coordination with finance
  • Providing stellar customer service via phone, email, mail and in-person as a main point of contact for development work
  • Maintaining all donation communication records; in collaboration with the development team to create and update donor communications including annual appeal, donation acknowledgements, sponsor signage onsite, donor newsletters and website
  • Collaboration with marketing and development staff on digital communications and physical signage
  • Supporting grants management by researching potential new funders, composing narrative, and contributing to program reports
  • Supporting major fundraiser events in coordination with the Development Manager
  • Supporting other special events, particularly friend and fundraising events: donor thank you events, adult nights, member nights, and partnership rentals
  • Cultivating entry level supporters by leading the animal adoption program, conducting thank you outreaches and non-ask communications
  • Supporting organizational customer service as backup phone support for visitors and customers

  • Contribute to advancing our core values:
  • Champion Excellence
  • Embody the Learner
  • Facilitate Flexibility
  • Invite Optimism
  • Provide Opportunity
  • Think Globally
  • Inclusivity

Experience and qualifications you bring:

We acknowledge that people bring all of themselves to their work, and your perspective, talents and skills may come from a wide range of work and life experiences. Your qualifications may include paid work, volunteer work, projects in a different field, or other experiences that have helped you build the competencies and knowledge needed to be successful in this role. We welcome and encourage diverse perspectives combined with a spirit of collaboration and community. We excitedly anticipate your application.

  • Four years of relevant education or work experience.
  • Two plus years of experience implementing office procedures and utilizing databases for scheduling and tracking purposes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to maintain confidences with private constituents and donor information.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills with the ability to quickly learn other software.
  • Detail oriented multi-tasker who is highly organized and committed to accuracy.
  • Ability to work collegially within a small organization.
  • Excellent customer service orientation; interact effectively with visitor and donor audiences, external organizations, organization staff, and volunteers.
  • Reliable transportation to travel between the Museum and Nature Center and meet with partners as needed.

It's a plus to have experience with the following:

  • Experience in a museum or nonprofit environment.
  • Passion and aptitude for Michigan's natural history.
  • Communications experience delivering strategic messaging in copywriting and graphic design for print and digital platforms.

Salary and Benefits

This is a full-time, exempt position that includes access to a comprehensive benefits package including medical and dental healthcare, paid vacation & sick days, 9 paid holidays, retirement plan, Employee Assistance Program, membership discounts and more! The salary range is $38,000 - $45,000, commensurate with experience.
