ABOUT CONGREGATION SHAAREY ZEDEK

Congregation Shaarey Zedek is a Reform congregation of approximately 182 families in East Lansing, MI. We seek to engage our members in meaningful Jewish expression and community. Our diverse membership draws from the surrounding areas.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Administration and office management: Manage day-to-day operation of the synagogue, including supervision of the facilities custodian.

Communication: Lead congregational communication by creating and sending content for monthly bulletins, weekly newsletters, the congregational website, and service leaflets. Serve as a liaison for members using synagogue facilities, manage facility reservations/rentals, and communicate with vendors via phone, email, and other channels.

Programs and calendar: Manage the synagogue calendar and program logistics. Oversee systems for scheduling and program attendance in coordination with staff and volunteers.  

Membership and engagement: Be the primary point of contact with the public and congregational members. Maintain membership and other databases and process registrations, pledges, and donations. Provide administrative support to Shaarey Zedek Religious School.  

Worship and lifecycle support: Provide administrative and logistical support for weekly Shabbat services, holidays, and lifecycle events for members (B’nei Mitzvot, funerals, etc.).

Finance: Assist with synagogue budgets and manage income and expenditures in conjunction with the business vice-president, treasurer, and bookkeeper. Manage website donations. Support fundraising efforts. Assume responsibility for tax forms and employee payroll.

Building management: Conduct regular inspection of building and inventory in collaboration with the facilities custodian to assess needs in the areas of cleaning, maintenance, and repair.

Safety and security: Assess and implement security and emergency management systems in coordination with lay leadership and facilities custodian.

YOU ARE

A team player and responsible leader who is excited to join thoughtful and considerate colleagues in a warm and vibrant synagogue community. 

NEED TO HAVE

Strong organizational, written/digital, and oral communication skills. 

Ability to work independently, follow up on tasks, set priorities, manage time efficiently, and be flexible. 

Ability to oversee and collaborate with staff, work with clergy and volunteer lay leadership, and establish and maintain effective relationships with synagogue members.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, Google Workspace, QuickBooks, and video conference software. 

Openness to learning Jewish customs and calendar. 

NICE TO HAVE

Previous synagogue and/or nonprofit management and HR experience.

Knowledge of principles and practices of temple administration, including temple organizational structures and budget.

Facility with Adobe and Constant Contact software.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary: Commensurate with experience (range is $50,000 - $55,000).

 Vacation: Two weeks (non-accruing) for the first two years; three weeks beginning in the third year.

 Health insurance is not included.

Work hours: Full time; mainly weekdays; flexible schedule; some evenings and weekends required.
