About the MI Nonprofit Relief Fund

Nonprofits do NOT have to be members of MNA to apply for grant funding.

The funding for this program comes from the federal Coronavirus Relief Funds awarded to the State of Michigan as part of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) has partnered with the Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA) to assist in administering this grant program on behalf of the state, consistent with federal and state requirements.

This project is being supported, in whole or in part, by federal award number SLFRF4948 awarded to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Development by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this funding, organizations must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits or projects fiscally sponsored by a 501(c)3 and able to demonstrate necessary expenditures and/or losses due to the COVID-19 public health emergency incurred after March 3, 2021 including lost public service revenue, costs for responding to a public health emergency, providing assistance to households, payroll protection, and other economic impacts negatively affecting service delivery.

The following organizations are NOT eligible to apply for this program:

  • For-profit entities
  • Organizations that are 501(c)(4)s, 501(c)(6)s, or otherwise other than 501(c)(3)
  • K-12 schools, including charter, public and private
  • Higher Education Institutions
  • Municipalities, municipal subdivisions, and other government agencies
  • Hospitals
  • Trade  associations
  • Credit unions
  • Insurance trusts
  • Fraternal orders
  • Religious Programming (faith-based nonprofits may request funding to support services that are not religious based programming and do not discriminate based on religion)

Intent to Apply & Application

The intent to apply was simply a tool to gauge need and interest statewide.

Other important facts for you to know:

  • Nonprofits do not have to be members of MNA to apply for/receive grant funding
  • The formal application opened today, March 22, 2023 at 12:00 PM EST
  • The application will close on Friday, May 5, 2023 at 11:59 PM EST

Each eligible application will be reviewed by nonprofit and community leaders from the applicant's region. Applications will be scored based upon demonstrated need, narrative, and supporting documentation. Grant awards will be disbursed beginning in August, 2023.

Compliance

Because this is a federally funded and state-operated program, there are certain registration requirements that all grantees will need to follow in order to receive funding. Additionally, we expect that there will be state reporting requirements and, depending on funding awarded, there may be additional compliance requirements for some grantees. More information about relevant compliance requirements will be forthcoming.

We look forward to reviewing your application.
