Founding History

Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA), in partnership with Council of Michigan Foundations (CMF) and Michigan Association of United Ways (MAUW) created the Nonprofit Council for Charitable Trusts (NCCT) in January 2004. 

 

Objectives

Principal Objective

The NCCT’s principal objective is to work in partnership and foster collaboration with the Michigan Department of Attorney General (Attorney General) concerning Michigan’s charitable nonprofit sector. Support for this principal objective includes but is not limited to:

  • Periodically review existing state legislation and regulations governing Michigan’s charitable nonprofit sector,
  • Provide input and information to the Attorney General regarding Michigan’s charitable nonprofit sector, and 
  • Explore educational opportunities for Michigan’s charitable sector in collaboration with the Attorney General. 

Second Objective

The NCCT’s second objective is to promote a more accountable, efficient, and responsive sector through compliance with relevant regulations and promotion of best practices. Support for this objective includes but is not limited to:

  • Exploring and implementing methods to inform nonprofits, professional fundraisers, attorneys, accountants and donors about registration and disclosure requirements,
  • Reviewing data collected by the NCCT’s, suggesting potential audiences for this information, and exploring how technology can facilitate the collection process, and 
  • Evaluating models and experiences from other states regarding their collection of data.


Leadership

The NCCT shall be chaired by Attorney General – Charitable Trust Attorney designee and shall be staffed by MNA with support from CMF and MAUW.

 

Composition of Council

To reflect the breadth and diversity of the charitable sector and Michigan, members of the Council shall be diverse in terms of demographics, geographic location, organization budget size and mission. In addition to representatives from 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations, for-profit professionals that provide services to nonprofits may also serve on the Council. 

 There are four (4) permanent seats on the Council:

  • The Attorney General of the State of Michigan or the Attorney General’s designee
  • Michigan Nonprofit Association president or the president’s designee
  • Council of Michigan Foundations president or the president’s designee
  • Michigan Association of United Ways president or the president’s designee
