This role is critical to the financial health of our organization, focusing on the rigorous management of our state and federal funding portfolio. You will serve as the primary bridge between our mission and our fiscal integrity, ensuring that every dollar is tracked, reported, and managed in strict adherence to grantor regulations.

Reporting directly to the Director of Philanthropy and working in close coordination with our Finance Department and Programs team, you will oversee the full lifecycle of institutional grants, with a mandate to maintain impeccable audit readiness.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Compliance & Grant Stewardship

  • Serve as the internal lead for all grant compliance. Ensure all activities, expenditures, and documentation are in strict alignment with grantor regulations and organizational policy.
  • Partner with the accounting department to monitor grant budgets, reconcile expenses, and ensure the precise tracking of restricted funds.
  • Own the preparation and submission of all financial reconciliation reports and complex progress reports. Ensure all documentation is accurate and delivered on time.
  • Act as the primary steward of grant funds, holding internal stakeholders accountable for adherence to financial processes and restricted-use guidelines.

Lifecycle Management & Operations

  • Maintain a detailed grants calendar managing all financial reporting deadlines, audit requirements, and compliance milestones.
  • Manage robust, centralized grant files that ensure complete traceability of all financial transactions to be ready for immediate inspection by auditors or grantors.

Philanthropy Support

  • Offer limited administrative support for major fundraising campaigns and events as requested by the Director of Philanthropy.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5+ years of professional experience in grant management, specifically within a nonprofit or public sector accounting/compliance capacity.
  • Proven, significant experience managing and ensuring compliance for complex state and federal grant portfolios (e.g., HUD, CDBG, FHLB, or similar). You should be deeply familiar with the nuances of government funding requirements.
  • Advanced knowledge of grant-specific financial reporting, budget development, and donor/grant management database systems. Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365.
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience.

Required Skills & Values

  • A natural aptitude for numbers, budget reconciliation, and navigating complex financial reporting requirements.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and a "compliance-first" mindset.
  •  Ability to translate complex financial/compliance requirements to non-finance staff while maintaining a strong, productive partnership with the accounting team.
  • Proven ability to manage a heavy, deadline-driven workload independently while maintaining total accuracy.

Must be based in or willing to commute to the Detroit office for a hybrid work schedule.
