The Human Resources Director will oversee and lead all human resources functions so that GSSEM can fulfill its vision of building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. The Director will also collaborate with a passionate, mission-driven employee base to actively build a highly impactful team. The Human Resources Director will report to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer.
POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting directly to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer and acting as an integral and strategic partner in GSSEM’s management team, the Director will manage all human resources functions like recruitment, hiring, compensation, benefits, HRIS software, training, onboarding/offboarding, compliance and employee relations. This leader will ensure that the necessary HR strategies, policies, and programs are in place for GSSEM to successfully achieve its mission. The Director will set and implement strategy as well as be a person who is comfortable rolling up their sleeves and executing the work necessary to support that vision.
Dedicated to the development of GSSEM staff, the Director will support a culture of feedback that promotes inclusion and belonging. This work should include the design of a performance management program and incorporate coaching of managers to foster trusting relationships with their teams through clear communication, professional development strategies, and accountability. The Director will partner with department leaders to identify solutions to individualized employee issues, as they arise.
Candidate Profile
The Director of Human Resources (“The Director”) will possess comprehensive knowledge of human resources best practices and will have the expertise needed to confidently lead all its function areas within a complex nonprofit organization. The Director will be a visionary leader who brings fresh ideas to the role, while also possessing the problem-solving and organizational skills needed to effectively carry out day-to-day operations. They will be knowledgeable of HR compliance rules and regulations with the ability to communicate those clearly to other organizational leaders. The Director will utilize sound judgment and discretion in all activities and will display the highest degree of integrity in the role.
In addition, the Director of Human Resources of Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan will possess the following attributes and competencies:
Relationship Building and Interpersonal Skills: Possessing a people-first orientation and a highly collaborative nature, the Director will be approachable and interested in engaging with staff to understand their values and needs. This personable individual will excel at building trust and credibility with staff, advocating for staff, and acting as a bridge to management. The Director will also invest in supporting and developing managers into effective supervisors who elicit results from their teams. Inclusive and open minded, the Director will bring significant experience in building healthy work cultures that incorporates employee wellness and results in staff who feel a strong sense of belonging.
Communication Skills: The Director will be a highly effective communicator and will possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Personable, understanding, and compassionate, the Director will listen to and value the voices of the GSSEM team. The Director will effectively articulate a clear vision for GSSEM’s policies and procedures around recruitment and training, compensation and evaluation, benefits administration, compliance, and employee relations in order to garner organization-wide buy-in and support.
Operations Excellence and Infrastructure Review and Updating: A self-starter, the Director will excel at reviewing and updating infrastructure as necessary and implementing the standardized systems, policies and procedures required to support HR functions. This analytical and tech savvy individual will come up with innovative solutions to streamline HR processes. A skilled and detail-oriented project manager, this individual will excel at managing multiple projects simultaneously and seeing them through to implementation.
