Summary

Local Media Association, a 501(c)(6) trade association, and Local Media Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable trust, seek a skilled, detail-oriented Staff Accountant with hands-on experience supporting both nonprofit and for-profit accounting, including work with foundations acting as fiscal sponsors/fiscal agents, grant-funded programs, and a membership-based trade association.

This is a hands-on, high-throughput accounting role. You will participate in day-to-day accounting workflows — receivables, payables, journal entries, reconciliations, banking activity — and support budgeting and routine reporting using Sage Intacct for Nonprofits.

The Staff Accountant will also perform accounting functions for Word In Black, a for-profit public benefit corporation operated by LMA under a management agreement while LMF oversees philanthropic funding support.

The Staff Accountant will join a team that includes the department head and three other part-time staff members.

Important scope note: Our finance team coordinates payroll processing and benefits administration logistics through our PEO (TriNet) and 401(k) provider (Ascensus). This position is not an HR generalist role and does not own recruiting, employee relations, performance management, or HR policy — though any HR process experience would be helpful.

Responsibilities

1) Day-to-day accounting operations

  • Execute day-to-day accounting activities in Sage Intacct, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger maintenance, journal entries, and reconciliations, using online banking interfaces and other systems.
  • With others on the finance team, execute receivables and payables for LMA, LMF, WIB, and programs for which we serve as a fiscal sponsor/fiscal agent.
  • Support budget build/maintenance tasks (uploads, updates, troubleshooting) and prepare routine financial reports and analyses in Intacct.

2) Payroll/benefits coordination

  • Execute periodic benefits administration maintenance tasks via TriNet and Ascensus, in coordination with the finance team.

3) Cash, investments, and liquidity support

  • Assist finance leadership with cash flow visibility and ensuring liquidity for general operations and grant-funded programs.
  • Help finance leadership administer LMA/LMF/WIB investments, including CDs and long-term investment accounts.

4) Compliance, audit, and risk support

  • Ensure work complies with federal, state, and local regulations and internal policies.
  • Participate in annual audit activities (and any funder-required audits), liaising with external auditors and the audit committee as needed.
  • Help identify and mitigate financial risks.

5) Grant and restricted fund support

  • Help administer the financial management of grants and restricted funds; support timely reporting to funders.

6) Collaboration and service to internal stakeholders

  • Work closely with the finance team and leadership to provide financial analysis and planning support; collaborate with program directors on financial aspects of program delivery.

7) Process improvement (practical and continuous)

  • Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes and improve efficiency, particularly in the use of supporting platforms.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA/CPA eligibility not required but a plus.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in hands-on accounting roles, with exposure to both for-profit and nonprofit organizations.
  • Sage Intacct (not other versions of Sage) experience is required and must be demonstrable in daily hands-on work.
  • Experience with association management platforms such as Impexium, and PEOs such as TriNet, is not required but a plus.
  • Proficiency in Excel/Google Sheets and web-based applications.
  • Comfort and efficiency with a fast pace of front-line, hands-on work in a small virtual organization.
  • Experience working with foundations acting as fiscal sponsors/fiscal agents is a plus; familiarity with grant accounting principles and requirements is required.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, excellent communication/interpersonal skills, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Virtual-work expectations: Candidates should be self-motivated and able to manage time effectively to meet deadlines and deliver high-quality work with minimal supervision.
