Kids Count Data Analyst/Senior Data Analyst

The Michigan League for Public Policy seeks a data analyst or senior data analyst to work on the Kids Count in Michigan project. This is an opportunity for someone with strong data analysis and research skills to promote child well-being across a wide range of policy areas, including education, health, economic security, and family and community factors. The successful candidate will lead the data analysis necessary to promote racial and economic justice policies benefiting families and children in the state of Michigan.

The Michigan League for Public Policy is a statewide research and advocacy organization that works to support economic security, equity and well-being for all Michigan residents through community engagement and the policymaking process. The League is the only Michigan organization that holistically provides research, analysis, policy recommendations and advocacy on a wide range of policy issues that impact those with low and moderate incomes and people of color. All of the League’s work is done through a racial equity lens and is informed by community voices, particularly Black and Brown voices which have historically been left out of policy decisions.

Kids Count in Michigan is part of a broad national effort to measure the well-being of children at the state and local levels and to use that information to shape efforts to improve the lives of children. For over 30 years, the League has been home to the state’s Kids Count project, producing timely data and analysis for partners across the state. The team produces the Kids Count in Michigan Data Profiles every year and the Kids Count in Michigan Data Book on a biannual basis. The 2026 Data Profiles will be released on September 17 at our Champions for Kids event in Lansing.

  • Produce tables, charts and maps for broad and diverse audiences and provide data presentations for partners, including alongside our community engagement team;
  • Serve as a resource for the League team and external partners, providing data and technical assistance;
  • Create the annual Kids Count in Michigan Data Profiles and produce additional data products, including fact sheets, blogs, data dashboards or other online tools;
  • Monitor state and federal policy issues and emerging trends in public policy, including understanding current data trends and threats;
  • Maintain relationships with state and national data partners to facilitate the collection and analysis of data from trusted sources;
  • Collaborate with League community engagement team to understand the challenges and views of those most impacted by the League’s policy work and represent the League at coalitions and meetings with partners;
  • Advance personal and organizational diversity, equity and inclusion efforts by fostering and maintaining a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Qualifications: While no candidate will have every desirable quality, the ideal candidate would have:

  • Commitment to economic, racial, and social justice and expanding opportunity to Michiganders through policy change.
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience managing and analyzing large datasets using statistical packages such as SAS, Stata, Python and/or R. Spatial analysis skills a plus.
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to use and synthesize data from multiple sources to make compelling policy arguments.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex issues to broad audiences and to think creatively about data visualization.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, identify opportunities and problem-solve through complex data challenges.
  • Curiosity, growth mindset towards learning new data skills, and initiative to suggest improvements or innovations on assigned projects.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently and prioritize and manage multiple tasks, but also able to collaborate and work as part of a team.
  • Interest in issues impacting children and families in Michigan.
  • Commitment to a culture of diversity and inclusion.
